The Tag!

I was tagged by Afro to do this so here goes:

1. Black and White or Color: how do you prefer your movies?

Color.

2. What is the one single subject that bores you to near-death?

Kenyan guys this, Kenyan women that..blah blah blah senseless BS!

3. MP3s, CDs, Tapes or Records: What is your favorite medium or pre-recorded music?

MP3s. For the simple reason of convenience. I do have 2 crates of LPs sitting around though. Collector’s items, wouldn’t trade them for the world.

4. You are handed one first class trip plane ticket to anywhere in the world and ten million dollars cash. All of this is yours provided that you leave and not tell anyone where you are going…Ever. This includes family, friends, everyone. Would you take the money and ticket and run?’

No! There are people I can’t live without in my life. Buy them off? No way!

5. Seriously, what do you consider the world’s most pressing issue now?

Frankly, I don’t think governments are giving the bird flu issue the urgency and seriousness it deserves, especially African governments. Its spread and reverberations if it grows into a pandemic can be devastating. Some pundits have compared it to the Spanish Flu of 1918-1920. News reports of its discovery in Nigeria are very unsettling.

6. How would you rectify the world’s most pressing issue?

Continue to educate the masses, prepare and fund more research on how to curb its spread. Also have a contingency plan. Ao sort of disaster recovery plan if it hits. So fac, only some prescription medicines for Human Influenza can work in treating the infection, however the strain (HN51) mutates and the virus becomes resistant to the drugs. We need more research and preparation - preventative, detective and recovery plans.

7. You are given the chance to fo back and change one thing in your life; what would that be?

Spend more time with my grandmother before she passed away. I really really regret not doing this.

8. You are given the chance to go back and change one event in world history, what would that be?

The Holocaust.

9. A night at the opera, or a night at the Grand Ole Opry - Which do you choose?

Never been to either one, I’d have to flip a coin.

10. What is the one great unsolved crime of all time you’d like to solve?

The Ouko Murder - who was behind it? Get irrefutable evidence. Maybe a dude “Githongo’d” someone discussing it? (I have my suspicions, the truth is out there somewhere)

11. One famous author can come to dinne with you. Who would that be and what would you serve for the meal?

Binyavanga Wainaina. We’d prolly discuss African Affairs and feast on some Mokimo, Nyamachoma, Kachumbari and have a beer. He strikes me as an talented and gracious character.

12. You discover that John Lennon was right, that there is no hell below us, and above us there is only sky - what’s the first immoral thing you might do to celebrate this fact?

Besides not telling anyone else (hehehe)settle Old scores from Primary school. Too many to count. One particular guy though, I’d have him flogged ridiculously…snitch!

AOB: Mixx coming up next.

Options

One thing that draws me to someone is ambition. I like driven people who excel in whatever field they are in be it music, IT, journalism, if you’re driven I like you (and no..not in that way). And doubly if you excel in more than one. This drive in people is as a result of certain motivation. Whatever your motivation is - money, the joy of results, jealousy, whatever it is, it drives you. The reason I talk about motivation vis a vis drive, is because I was listening to a certain lady friend talk about life to another of my friends. She has a great education, a lawyer by training and has had the great fortune handed to her by her benevolent parents and family. In the continuing conversation, one lady mentioned that she is driven by a passion to earn money (in obscene amounts I may add), another vehemently disagreed:

Money can’t be your motivation“, she contends., “find your passion and money will find you”.

“No no no way”, the other interjected,“your drive should be to live a good life so that others benefit from you, help others and you will be helped” she says as she holds the milk jar ready to feed the child.

I know this is like the infamous egg and chicken argument. What if your passion doesn’t necessarily involve making money? Like watching ducks or something? And we all need money to live this good life? I don’t care what your motivation is. If it’s money - it buys you options. You can either build a house for your mother or go skiing. Actually I agreed with the first lady, not because she wants to make money but really, money buys you options. Options..thats what its all about. It’s the option help others.

AOB – Got some wicked! Tracks from Msanii – Thanks man.

Tribute

I got tagged by Afro to do a meme which I will be posting next. Today being International Women’s Day I want to talk about something relevant to women and celebrating International Women’s Day. I want to talk about my mom.

I realize now how big an impact she had on me. My existence (well actually this parody that I refer continously to as an existence), is wholly based on principles and lessons I learnt from her. How she rose from humble begginings to the top of the corporate world. In all her successes and her failures, despite enormous responsibilities, she kept our family together. I remember once in boarding school I got an exciting letter from her telling me she had landed a senior position with an insurance firm in the City. I was only 11 years old. I now realize how important it was (is) for her to share her life with us irregardless of what levels she got to. Also as i celebrate my mom, I also want to add that how I see my mother was in large part influenced too by my dad. How he treated her. I know this is women’s day  but I also want to celebrate what my dad taught me about treating women (my mom and my sis). The respect, dignity and appreciation he showed.  She (my mom) was in every sense a leader as much as my dad was and it is through this prism that I see the love of my life baby girl. We are a partnership and I celebrate her too today! And to all the mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, grandmothers…all women from me to you. Happy International Women’s day. Here’s to celebrating what you bring to this world.

Transition
